Floral arrangements are a great decorating accent for your home, particularly during the festive winter entertaining season. But between the expense of presents and parties, a pricey custom bouquet might not be in your budget. I am continually asked for advice on how to create simple, relatively inexpensive floral arrangements, so I decided that today I will pass on a few of my own do-it-yourself tips and tricks. Whether you are on a tight holiday budget or simply love the idea of crafting your own, I am here to show you how to take a grocery store bouquet from average to exceptional!
If you have browsed the floral section at your local grocery store you have noticed that many bouquets are filled with a seemingly random selection of flowers, sprigs and greenery, many times with pieces that seem over-the-top in terms of color and variety. Large chain grocery stores tend to invest in what I like to call “filler” flowers to bulk up a bouquet – but don’t fret, style-wise the “filler” can work well for your DIY bouquet! When working with store-bought seasonal blooms, I prefer to pick bouquets based on their general color scheme versus the individual style of a few flowers or greenery.
Creating a Statement Floral Centerpiece
A statement floral centerpiece is meant to be the focal point in a room. This style of bouquet is a wonderful addition to a entryway table, coffee table, kitchen counter or even your dining room table. When I create a statement floral centerpiece I like to start by purchasing two bouquets. For my first bouquet I like a stock holiday bundle filled with traditional seasonal hues. For my second bouquet I like to focus on a few signature blossoms or sprigs that will highlight the prominent colors in the holiday bouquet.
Tips: Keep in mind that red blooms can easily be lost in a sea of color by blending in with your other holiday decor. Consider a crisp white floral pallet for a more luxurious look and add a minimal pop of color. When blending the two bouquets, remove all of the seasonal sprigs from the holiday bunch, and then combine what is left with the signature blooms from your second bouquet. Make sure that you really inspect the condition of your blooms before you leave the store, there is nothing sadder than wilted flowers.
Trick: A statement floral centerpiece really needs to be showcased in a tall vase. For a classic style that will highlight the beauty of the blooms, a simple white porcelain vase pairs exceptionally. If you are looking for a trendier design, a vintage milk glass vase makes for a great companion piece.
A Collection of Mini Bouquets
If you are looking to add a splash of floral color but don’t necessarily want a large statement piece, a fun collection of mini bouquets is a fresh way to style your store-bought arrangement. For this display style I will normally only purchase a single holiday bouquet and focus on using all of the fun seasonal sprigs and greenery.
Tip: Separate your holiday bouquet and cluster the smaller bunches into individual containers. For example, I like to gather all of the red and green blooms into one container, while filling another with sprigs and greenery and then accenting with a single beautiful bloom. Your mini bouquets will look beautiful clustered together as a collection, but can also make for a fun stand alone decoration in multiple areas throughout your home.
Trick: Take your DIY bouquets up a few notches! Gather a collection of small random containers such as bud vases, mason jars or vintage cans, all of differing heights and width. Invest in a can of gold or silver metallic spray paint, and with just a few coats you can elevate your decor from plain Jane to Hollywood glam!
