Without an estate sale this week I’ve had some extra time to finish a few lingering projects around the house. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve still be really busy with my organizing clients. It’s just that each estate sale brings in hundreds of emails and dozens of calls that I usually have to tend to until the wee hours of the night.
On Wednesday I shared my updated “Thumb” sign and received great feedback, especially from those of you who are from my beloved “Thumb” of Michigan! Today’s reveal is another painted project, a cute hutch that almost became homeless after one of our January estate sales.
This piece was hiding in a shed at our San Carlos sale but I kept my eye on it. I priced it at $195 hoping to sell it for $140 but I didn’t…get…one…bite! I was shocked! I loved so many things about it when I first laid eyes on it! Can you blame me? The low profile, cute shelves, antique hinges, and cute doors deserved a second chance!
When it didn’t sell my client offered it to me as a thank you for my work on her project and she talked me into taking it home. I had big plans for it before I even loaded it in my truck. I’ve been updating our dining room ever since I moved the dining table into the kitchen and I knew it would be the perfect fit for an empty wall.
Here is a before and after. The original piece was very very dirty, Chris had to sand it and wash it really well for me last weekend before I could start painting. It had lingering “critter” scent to it, there’s always a catch!
It is a small piece with loads of character, I just love it!
I wanted to keep the hardware in the original rusty condition to add charm so we removed it after we cleaned it up. It looks to me that the doors were added after the fact. What do you think? In this before shot it looks like it used to be a plain bookshelf…
I considered leaving the doors off for a second, then I was reminded of their charm. I love the mini-panel detailing and the antique hardware.
I used Benjamin Moore’s Pewter just in case you are wondering the color…
The cabinet is the perfect place to store some of the smaller entertaining items and dishes that I grab constantly. I also think it will be fun to jazz up around the holidays!
Here is a peek at what my dining room is turning into these days. I love my new table, I’ll have to share better pictures one of these days.
Okay, last picture. I hope this little painted project reminds you that paint does make perfect. Sometimes a little bit of color can completely enhance a charming little hutch like this one!
Your talent at seeing potential in pieces is nothing short of inspirational! I agree about the doors. They make it so much more charming.
Thank you Tari!
I totally agree with Tari on both points. I love the changes to your dining room. It would look great in an aqua color in a coastal cottage.
It agree, aqua would be great. It turned out a little more blue than I wanted but for now it works. I was thinking aqua but I have so many aquas in the house I was overwhelmed with trying to match them!
What a sweet piece. So glad you became its new owner!
Love it–it’s adorable!
Absolutely gorgeous! I need to step out of my comfort zone and paint! Thanks for sharing on Sunday FUNday!
