One of the projects I worked on this week was a small closet in my client’s master bedroom. She uses it for extra linens, extra beauty products, and jewelry. At 3 feet deep the shelves offer lots of storage. The key to organizing a space like this is thinning out the clutter and positioning high use items in the front and low use items in the back.
My client is the “shopaholic” client that I wrote about last week. She is familiar with my process and because she has done so much work to prepare to let go the process went pretty quickly. We started on the top and began pulling everything off the shelves. We set up sorting areas on the floor and got to work.
My client is the queen of accessorizing. She has a great collection of new and vintage jewelry. When we found a big box of the jewelry that she saved from the 80s she initially thought she needed to hold on to it to use for future art projects. When I came back to line the shelves and organize all of the jewelry into the jewelry organizers that she found at Bed Bath & Beyond she decided that she could let go of the entire box. Sometimes it just take a few hours or days to think about an item before you can say goodbye and that is okay. Just remember when you decide that something can go away to follow through and donate it.
Can you see the difference on the bottom shelf? We were able to donate lots of towels and sheets. The end result is much more manageable and will be easy to maintain.
All of the products we used helped to maximize the space and to keep the items visible. The jewelry stackers worked great for necklaces, rings, and earrings. I put labels on the outside so she would know exactly which level to look for particular items and I place the pieces that she wears most often on top.
It was another fun project to work on together. I really enjoyed hearing the stories behind some of the pieces and helping this special client clear the clutter yet again! She let me interview her after the session so I will publish the Q & A post next week. I hope some of you can relate to her story and her honest answers will help you learn how to prepare to let go.
