Katie from The Khoury Family has the cutest blog, I love reading about her latest DIY projects, recipes, and parties and activities that she plans for her children (Gabe and Grace). When I asked her to guest blog for Kids Week I was excited when she said she would write a post about children’s party planning and themes. I hope you enjoy this post as much as I did!
Planning a summer get together can be so much fun. I enjoy throwing parties and I always try to make it a special event for everyone attending. Often times I try to include a few unexpected touches to create a festive feel that helps get the party started. I start by focusing on the children and I try to create a fun atmosphere for them. If the kids are happy then the adults are usually pretty happy as well.
Think outside the box and consider bringing outdoor furniture inside, throwing down a picnic blanket indoors, or scouring Goodwill to find cheap pieces to refinish. I found this set of children’s furniture for $7 and made it work for a party I threw recently.
I simply spray painted the legs in antique white, added a little batting, and stapled a cute fabric over it. I like this idea because it means I can easily switch out the fabric if I want to change the look for the next party.
2. Centerpieces Kids love a fun centerpiece. This wheatgrass “worm” is my most favorite and clever centerpiece. It was so easy and such a hit with the kids. I simply took an old nylon stocking and filled it with potting soil mixed with the grass seed. It took about a week or so to grow, but it was so darling.
Another easy and inexpensive thing to do is to use children’s books or toys that you already have around the house. Here I placed some Beauty and the Beast figurines on the table to give the kids something to play with while they waited for dinner.
3. Activities Plan activities that will work for the majority of kids attending. For a gathering with kids of various ages indoor or outdoor “stations”would be a good idea. A few weeks ago we threw a party and I had created 5 stations in the backyard and it was a hit. We had a variety of things such as a sock relay, soccer station, t-ball station, a balance beam, and a balloon relay. In a second location I had a CD player set up with kid-friendly music and the kids were able to play “freeze dance.” The kids were busy the entire night and the adults had plenty of time for conversation.
4. Dessert Who doesn’t love a fun dessert that is interactive? Try something different like these deconstructed s’mores or a surprising dessert like this flag cake that I had them decorate for an Independence Day party. Kids love to get involved…so be creative and do something unexpected! It will definitely make your party a success.

These are such cute ideas. The smores in a glass is great, and when kids can make it themselves that makes it even better. Thanks for sharing!

Cute post. Thanks for providing some ideas on how to set up a child's party. Creating individual arrangements including fixtures seem to add a nice touch.

Great ideas in your post. I would like to add more that if parties are organised according to kids taste then party can be more full of excitement.
